My daughter and I stopped into Supercuts for an impromptu trim one afternoon.
I added our names to the wait list. We plopped down on the purple couch. I reached for my phone in my purse and she rested her tired head in my lap—eyes closed, feet up, and without a care in the world.
I opened my e-mail.
"Aw, I wish I could take a nap like that!," a grandmother sitting across from us said with a wink and a smile.
My thumb stretched to the next app on my smartphone. I looked up and replied, "I know, right!" With my thumb still hovering over the app, I turned my eyes back to my phone.
God gently whispered to my soul, "Small talk is sacred." I knew I had to stop the scroll.
I quickly placed my phone face down beside me on the purple couch.
For the next fifteen minutes we chatted about all the small thing—the weather, eating too many sweets over the holidays, beach walks to remedy said sweet eating, and just how stinkin’ fast babies grow up.
The more we went back and forth, two strangers making seemingly insignificant small talk on a purple couch, the more I realized how truly sacred this moment was.
Yes, it is surely a sacred act to look into eyes instead of apps.
And isn't this the heart of God? To look deeply, lovingly, and listen to the small stuff? The small stuff happens to be intertwined with the big stuff, by the way!
We are two strangers who will never cross paths again. But I reminded her that spring is around the corner—more daylight for more beach walks. And in such a beautiful way, she reminded me that I should squeeze my husband extra tight. Time flies so stinkin’ fast.
With God's help, I want to be the woman who chooses eyes over apps— not only at the salon, but in the sacred square footage I call home.
Small Talk > Scrolling
Eyes > Apps
Like the still small voice of God the Father gently reminded me on the purple couch, small talk is sacred. And I believe our soul is hungry for the sacred moments, even in Supercuts.
How can you choose eyes over apps today? Whether it’s running errands or eating dinner, make a small choice to embrace the sacred small talk that comes your way today. You won’t regret it.
And when you’re out and about today, remember small talk > scrolling and eyes > apps.
Grace and Peace,
Audra

Audra- A lot of great points here. And it prompts everyone to rethink what’s really important. I appreciate it!
